Isn't that a fundamental category of human culture? That fundamental union between word and music that is present in just about every culture, and at every level of cultural production from high to low and middle. Then there would a small area of song studies that studied musicless songs, otherwise known as poems. Orphan songs that have lost their music or musical tradition. Among "orphan songs" there would be several categories;

(1) Song texts whose specific music or entire musical tradition has been lost.

(2) Song texts that are written without music, but that are still fundamentally song texts. Their music has just not been written yet.

(3) Songs written with an internal song music, that don't need musical settings because the music is in the words. [Is there any difference between (2) and (3)?]

(4) Poems that have one foot in the song tradition, but really have stepped over into the written poem tradition. Most renaissance sonnets, for example.

(5) Other kinds of poetry that are relatively alien to anything that might be sung.

The last category moves out of the orphan song into the new genre, which we might call still call "poetry" but that is relatively alien to most poetic traditions historically and anthropologically.

Cross posted to Bemsha Swing

Paco de Lucía y Camarón en Youtube

Paral el jueves...

1. There is no unifying connection between the texts chosen. An absence of intellectual curiosity: there is more concern with how the text relates to contemporary life; much less concern with wondering how those in other periods conceived of their reality.

There are quadruple spaces between sections of the paper; even then the paper doesn't reach the required five pages.

Vocabulary is very basic. On every page the words "importante," "tema," or "diferente" appear numerous times. The student uses "bueno" and "malo" repeatedly instead of searching for synonyms. Even "negativo" once in a while in place of malo would provide some variation. The student uses the word "trabajo" instead of "obra," for a literary "work."

There is no sense of pride taken in writing grammatical, elegant Spanish.

Portrait of the B Paper

The student has made a careful attempt to follow the assignment. Perhaps she has emailed the professor with a question or two. The writing is clear and, for the most part, grammatical. There is an acceptable, though not particularly original or specific, thesis. There is an overall argument, and transitions between paragraphs.

About two thirds of the material in the paper is basically derived from class discussions, but this material is integrated with some new ideas and analysis. This is genuine college-level work, with no high-schoolish overtones.

An A paper?

There is a sense of passion behind the writing of the paper. The student has gone beyond the basic assignment to figure out an original angle. Most of the material presented is not derived from the professor's ideas. In fact, the professor learns something new from reading it. At the same time, there is a certain mastery of the concepts presented in the class. There may be some flaws in organization and writing, but overall the paper is more than sufficient for the assignment.

Hints for exam:

Explanation of several proverbs.

(By universal I mean trans-cultural.) In other words, we might expect to find the *same* or at least the equivalent proverb, in various cultures. At the same time, proverbs seem deeply inbedded in a particular culture, in that they often draw on culturally specific information. Rome wasn't built in a day become "no se ganó Zamora en una hora." There may be a few master-proverbs, of the type, "the father will resemble the son," with various expressions in different cultures.

Another interesting dichotomy. Proverbs seem to be the expression of very general truths. Yet their actual use, or deployment comes in pragmatic situations. Their meaning is in their application to ordinary situations in life. You would say that somebody wouldn't know the meaning of proverb unless they could use it in a specific situation.

I find the power of the proverb to lie in its combination of universal and culturally specific, general and pragmatic uses.

Clichés and lugares comunes

Did you ever have an English prof who told you not to use so many clichés? Well, we all have had that professor. I have even been that professor! But another word for someone who knows a lot of clichés is somebody who is linguisticially competent. Think about it for a minute. If you knew all the clichés in Spanish, you would know quite a bit of Spanish.
Lugares comunes or commonplaces, are to be avoided, in excess, but isn't it worse not to have known them in the first place?

Think of the phrase "woefully inadequate." We know somehow that this adverb goes with the adjective inadequate. I find 837,000 hits on google for this phrase. So your English teacher is right to mark it as a cliché, right? Yet when you say this phrase it sounds rightl; it is idiomatic English.

Think of other adverb/adjective combinations that are statistically probable...

Now think of how to say, in Spanish, "to get to sleep." It is "conciliar el sueño." That is an idiom, but also, in some sense a cliché, a formula. As writers of English, your goal might be to avoid falling into excessively formulaic language. But in Spanish, a second language for you, part of what your goal should be is to know these formulaic phrases.

Proverbs, or refranes, are, in some sense, the canonical *clichés* in a language.

Mangas de camisa

My grandfather was a white-collar worker who did quite well in business, but he came from a relatively poor farming background. His father, (my great-grand-father Elijah) was a little resentful that his son had done so well, and so (according to my father) he used to use the proverb "From shirtsleeves to shirsleeves in three generations." This was a nineteenth-century saying in the US referring to the fact that one generation might do better than the next, but that there was no guarantee that the third generation would continue to do as well. In other words, social mobility is possible, but temporary at best.

"Shirt-sleeves" in this context means wearing a shirt without a suit-jacket over it. For someone in a good position in society, being in shirt sleeves (mangas de camisa) would be like being only half dressed. It thus means what we would call "blue collar" or "working class." It's an interesting use of metonymy.

This phrase is virtually the only connection I have to my father's grandfather. While I might have some sense of what the phrase meant without this bit of family history, I don't think would understand its force, or the resentment that might be behind someone saying it. It isn't simply a neutral observation, but a sort of insulting warning: "You think you're better than me, but your children will be just as poor as I am." What the story provides is a sort of pragmatic context in which the use, not just the abstract meaning, can be understood.

It's also interesting to put in the context of the proverbial tradition which links children to their parents or the individual to the group. Here the white collar businessman is treated as the exception, the one who wears a suit in contrast to his father, and, presumably, his son too. It's a little more complicated than the simple "acorn doesn't fall far from the tree" sort of adage.

Poor Richard's Almanack.

It might be interesting to consider the genre of the almanack--meant to be a useful compendium of information, and including, often, maxims or proverbs. Doxa / paradox.

My friend Nick Piombino is an accomplished aphorist and poet. One of his series of aphorisms bears the title "contradicta." You can read some of what he has to say here. You may have to scroll down a bit to read some contradicta.

Doxa means belief or opinion. We get words like orthodox and heterodox from this greek root. A "paradox" is something that goes against conventional belief. Contradicta means more or less the same thing, but in Latin rather than Greek. "Against what is said."

Anonymous proverbs are a good source of information about doxa or folk-belief. Some do take the form of paradoxes, in that they warn that your best friend might end up being more dangerous than your worst enemy (entre dos amigos, un notario y tres testigos), that you might reach the shore and drown anyway (nadar, nadar, y en la orilla afogar), etc... In the same sense, Yogi Berra-isms are often based on paradoxes (nobody goes there any more, it's too crowded) or tautologies (it ain't over till it's over).

So Nick's contradicta might go against the "conventional wisdom" or actually echo elements of the "conventional wisdom" or oral tradition, to the extent that this tradition is already paradoxical or self-critical. This tradition is always right, except when it is wrong. All proverbs are true, says Don Q, because they are all based on experience, the mother of science (knowledge). "No hay refrán que no sea verdadero..." Yet we know that the conventional wisdom can be banal, stupid, or even dangerously misleading as well.

PS: Instructions for the paper are below; you may have to scroll down because I keep adding new posts.

What will you do with your salary? Ninety percent I'll spend on good times, women, and Irish whiskey. The other ten percent I'll probably waste.

This recent book review of a quotation dictionary is (perhaps more than) marginally relevant to our class. Quotations, like proverbs, circulate widely and serve a similar function in everyday discourse. Many times we repeat quotations without knowing who "said them" originally, so they become quasi-anonymous. They also seem to settle into a more "quotable" bumper-sticker-like form. They might not have survived in their original state.

Be attentive to what you hear all around you. Listen for

(1) Clichés or stock phrases. "Get a life." "Too much information."

(2) "Snowclones."

(3) Proverbs.

How much of ordinary conversation consists of these elements?

The author of La Celestina was obviously closely attuned to this language in his own day. I'm sure he had the equivalent of a quotation dictionary that he had compiled himself before writing this work.

There used to be a practive of keeping a "commonplace book," in the 18th century. A person would write down quotations, maxims, etc... to use when writing. Kind of a storehouse of information.

In the 19th century, the French writer Flaubert compiled a "dictionary of received ideas." He wrote down *dumb* things that he heard people say without thinking, automatically in most cases. Like "apricots: we won't have good ones this year."

This dictionary could be conceived of as an "anti-commonplace" book, in the sense that Flaubert is not going to use these ideas himself. Mockery, not imitation, is his goal. He thus places himself at odds with a particular oral tradition. In some sense Fernando de Rojas is in a similar state: he is somewhat cynical, like Flaubert, and thus might cite a proverb against the grain, using it for a perverse rather than edifying purpose. I don't believe he is as cynical as Flaubert: he still views quotations from famous authors as a source of wisdom. There is, however, a sense in which his proverbs "cut both ways," since an ostensibly sound piece of advice can be disastrous if used wrongly.

Think also of how Sancho Panza's refranes "speak him," rather than vice-versa. That is similar to the way in which the targets of Flaubert's satire are spoken by the commonplaces or "received ideas" which they mouth. We know that Flaubert was a huge admirer of Cervantes. Madame Bovary, like Don Quixote, is perverted by too much reading of sentimental fiction.

Any area of popular culture or everyday life will be rife with commonplaces, be it entertainment, sports, or politics. Listen next time you hear someone interviewed from any of these areas. What are you hearing?

Here are some themes we have discussed in class with reference to the
refranero

The Great Chain of Being. (La gran cadena del ser) This has to do with the idea that human behaviour can be explained by reference to "lower" elements of the chain. Proverbs about platns, animals, and inanimate objects are ultimately about people.

Literal and metaphorical meanings. There are proberbs about the weather than seem to mean exactly what they say: they are about the weather. On the other hand, a proverb about the weather might be about something else.

"It never rains but it pours." [Things happen in extreme ways. Nobody comes into the restaurant where you are working as a server until 6 p.m., but then 40 people come in at once. You might say "I never rains but it pours."

In Spanish: "llover sobre mojado" means something like "to add insult to injury," or "to rub salt in the wound." It means, literally, "to rain on already wet ground," but is used for situations in which an already bad situation gets worse, or there is simply "more of the same."

Pragmatic meaning

To understand a proverb we must understand the type of situation in which it might be used. Take the example of Más sabe el diablo por viejo que por diablo. It might be used when speaking of an older person who is particularly astute in his or her dealings. This is a more effective explanation than a more abstract statement about the devil.

Quien mucho abarca poco suele apretar,
Meter aguja y sacar reja,
A dineros pagados, braços quebrados,
A buen entendedor,
Tenemos hijo o hija,
A mesa puesta,
Mueran e biuamos,
Mientras más moros, más ganancia,
El moço del escudero gallego,
A muertos e a ydos,
A nuevo negocio nuevo consejo,
Hazientes e consintientes merecen ygual pena,
Perdido es quien tras perdido anda,
A otro perro con ese huesso,
A perro viejo no cuz cuz,
A tal perra vieja,
